ROLE MODELS IN EDUCATION
Teachers themselves provide role models for students, and the teaching profession has offered advancement to women in developed countries since the nineteenth century. Teaching was seen as an occupation suited to women because it combined employment with child care. Female teachers, who are also role models, predominate in the lower grades. For example, in the mid-1980s, the proportion of female teachers at the preschool levels was above 90 percent in England, France, Ireland, Greece, and Sweden and above 70 percent for primary levels in these countries. Although women constitute the majority of teachers of young children, the majority of administrators in primary schools are men, and as the grade level of education increases, the number of women teachers decreases (Wilson, 1991).
The number of women faculty at the university level rarely exceeds 25 percent; women faculty are often clustered into traditionally female subject areas (e.g., languages, humanities, and nursing) and tend to be at the bottom of the academic hierarchy. The number of full professors in most universities in North America and Europe during the 1980s and 1990s was and remains under 10 percent. The educational structure sends an overwhelming message of the limits of female power. This message is internalized to students of both sexes and contributes to a reinforcement of male dominance in the world of work and other public institutions.
